Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>gen_discussion, others (more info?)

I just downloaded "office 97 eraser" from the microsoft website. When
I went to install it, it told me that several system files were out of
date. I said OK to updating. BIG Mistake.
Now, when I try to use the "find target" for a shortcut, or "open
containing folder" in Find File, it doesn't work.

Also, any suggestions to figure out what else it "updated"?

Ok, I know this problem happened once before, and I fixed it by
reinstalling a .dll file. However, I can't recall what it is nor can I
find a bookmark about it. Could somebody refresh my memory on what dll
file is corrupted by Microsoft's own software so I can restore from a
backup?

The MS eraser tool you downloaded was probably specific to
WinXP or Vista, so the updates you accepted probably overwrote
several Win98 system files with code Win98 cannot recognize.
If you have both your Win98 System CD and the Security Update
CD, reinstallation is probably your fastest route to repair of Win98.

That's what I used, and by "doesn't work" I mean I click on the button
and nothing happens.
Incidentally, reinstalling Office97 fixed the problem. Even though the
program files were still in C:\Program Files.
I couldn't get fast find to uninstall, so I tried the remover utility.

What does "doesn't work" actually mean? What happens?

See if this fixes it:

Click Start> Run, type the following and click OK:
Regedit.exe

Navigate to, and select, the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

In the right-pane, double-click the (Default) entry.
Type the word: none and press Enter.
Close Regedit

Don, I am assuming he used this utility, which works with Win98/ME/2K,
but is automatically disabled on XP or newer:

Utility to completely remove remaining Office 97 files and registry
entries
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176823

I doubt anything near a reinstall is needed for this problem.
