Compaq Presario ms w ME v 4.90.3000 5WV280
128 mb of ram 900 mhz Amd Athlon processor
30gb hd with 23 gb free
IE 6 SP1 plus internet tools
F sys 32 bit

when i use Belarc advisor it says that i have windows installer msiexe.exe
modified in 2002 (i just picked up this pc in aug 2009)

it also says i need to reinstall UPDQ823559.which i tried and it does not
seem be there.

when i go to download most programs,( examples- RaydarSync, or filehippo
updater, or openwith.org etc etc.) they first say that i need netframework
two, the program then asks to download it and it cannot because it says that
i need the prerequisite ms wiindow install 2.0 (Instmsi.exe). i also get the
message that i am missing DLL file MSCOREE.DLL.

i have been to ms download sites for the installer, the update and the net
frame work a zillion times, they are not lisred in add/remove and i do not
know how to find them or open them if they are in my system somewhere.
i am frustrated and need help straightening all of this out. i do not know
if i should try AAron Stebner's net framework set up verification tools etc
and or the windows installer clean up utility or both or not ??????????????

please help !!!!!

Wait until Mike, Mart or Noel arrive......they will be able to assist you.
It is now 9:45 in England, but they should still be up.

Win Me "out of the box" includes the Windows Installer 2.0. On attempting
to install Windows Installer 2.0 on a Win Me system I get the error message
"The specified service already exists" I've just tested this on a clean
"out of the box" installation of Win Me.

After testing this I was able to install .Net Framework 2.0 which is then
listed in Add/Remove programs as ".Net Framework 2.0"

MSCoree.dll is part of the .NET Framework. Installing .Net 2.0 installs
mscoree.dll v2.0.50727.42 dated 23 Sept 2005.

Update 823599. Alas the link to the Win Me version of this patch towards
the bottom of the associated KB article KB823599 "MS03-023: Buffer overrun
in the HTML converter could allow code execution"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823559) takes you to the Windows Update
site rather than linking to the Download Centre. I see the patch listed
there but only after upgrading to IE6 SP1.

"823559: Security Update for Microsoft Windows
Download size: 305 KB, < 1 minute
An identified security issue in Microsoft Windows could allow an attacker to
compromise a Microsoft Windows-based system and then take a variety of
actions. For example, an attacker could execute code on the system. By
installing this update, you can help protect your computer. After you
install this item, you may have to restart your computer."

This particular update is one of the few that show in Win Me's Add/Remove
Programs where it is listed as "Windows Millennium Edition Q823559 Update.
This update is not required for the installation of .Net Framework 2.0

As I suspect you know little or nothing of the online history of the system
between the day it was first used and your purchase this month I would VERY
strongly urge you to wipe the hard drive and clean install Win Me. This is
much easier than trying to fix a PC with many years of unknown history.

IIRC, installing the .NET Framework requires the Installer 2 redist update?
http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cebbacd8-c094...55-b702

Note that the installer is named InstMsiA.exe - there is also one named
InstMsiW.exe which is for NT-based systems.

Having said that, Mike is quite right to suggest that you reformat and
reinstall the OS - you never know what 'goodies' the previous users may have
left behind!

Noel,

I found I didn't have to update the windows installer on a clean Win Me
install to be able to install the .Net 2.0 Framework. Attempting to do
install using the downloaded InstMsiA.exe gave the error message "The
specified service already exists".

I can't help but wonder what goodies and nasties are lurking on a system of
that age especially so given the problems reported. I know that I wouldn't
want it attached to my LAN until I was really sure that it was perfectly
clean.

As has already been strongly recommended. Wipe the box and reinstall the
OS. Until you do so you are simply wasting your time trying to work with a
damaged installation where you know nothing of its history. Wiping and
reinstalling and updating Win Me should take a couple of hours at most.

thanks Mike and i know that you mean well, but 1: i bought this at a garage
sale real cheap and did not get an ME installation disc. 2: i have an xp
upstairs 3: i am just learning how to repair, adjust, and try new things
sooooooooooo i thought that it would be easier to work with one that had
problems than to screw up one that did not. if i fail on this one it won't
matter to much because i have another to rely on. i am afraid to try things
on my other pc. could you give me one more explanation about my last question
concerning raydar sync? i'll only bother you about my xp in the future.
thanks

I'm sorry but you don't appear to understand why I have written what I have.
There is something very wrong with your system and the quickest, surest and
safest way of continuing is to wipe the system and clean install. You have
no idea of what the system may have been used for for the last eight or nine
years nor which of countless possible root kits (rare on 9x systems
thankfully), trojans or other malware it might be harbouring.

I'm sorry to appear so negative but a time comes for all systems when it is
best to start again and with a PC bought at a garage sale that is the minute
you get the PC home. My approach would be slightly different if the machine
had been used by you or family member and contained personally valuable
pictures or other documents as the priority would be to recover those
documents.

You say you have no media. That doesn't necessarily mean that you cannot
reinstall Win Me. Check if you have a C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or
C:\Windows\Options\Install folder that contains approx 150-160MB of files
including a number of files with a CAB extension (BASE2.CAB, CATALOG.CAB,
DRIVERn.CAB x3, WIN_nn.CAB x16) plus various other files (some added when
installing updates) and most importantly setup.exe. If so then these are
all you need to reinstall Win Me together with a valid product key which if
not on a label stuck to the PC should be able to be recovered from the
registry using Regedit. Using Regedit browse to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
and in the right hand pane you should find a value labelled "ProductKey".
The data for this value is what you need.

Noel Paton has a site that gives further advice on reinstalling Win Me over
itself which might help
(http://www.crashfixpc.co.uk/ME_Gen/reinstall_ME_over_itself.htm). Whilst
reinstalling Win Me over itself is not as good as flattening and starting
again it should help fix your problems. Remember to note and act on Noel's
comments about renaming wmploc.dll if WMP has been upgraded and to uninstall
IE6 if installed before attempting to reinstall Win Me.

Hello:

Mike is quite right when he suggests doing a fresh install of Win ME in this
case.

If you do not find the Win ME cab files on your hard drive as suggested by
Mike in another post, you can find used copies (legit) for sale on eBay.

See:
http://computers.shop.ebay.com/Software-/18793/i.html?Category=Operati...2520Sys .

HTH,
Jerry
