1. Numbering of the various .NET packages is independent of
the numbering of XP's SP1 through SP3.
2. First items to verify for your problem may be:
-- Update of the OS (SP3.)
-- Up-to-date MS Installer software (probably prerequisite for
SP3, likely also prerequisite for other OS packages since SP3.)

Not sure exactly what you have done, and in what order.

Be sure to close ALL programs including those running in the background

I do have Microsoft .Net framework 3.5 SP1 installed. I checked in Add/Remove programs.
The version number is stated correctly in the registry under 3.5 key under Net framework Setup but the 3.0 key shows 30618 as i mentioned above.
I really don't want to uninstall .net framework and install it again as i have SQL and other software installed on my machine and I'm worried it might break some of those links.
