AIM client for Win98

Post by slickrcbd »

I just got an automated message from AOL yesterday telling me that in
a few days I won't be able to log on to AIM with my old computer
unless I upgrade to the latest version...that requires Windows 2000 or
XP.

What alternate client can I use to connect to AOL Instant Messenger
with my windows 98 computer? I use it all the time to pass links to my
new computer or to communicate with friends while I'm in the middle of
a game on my newer system.

I also use the file transfer feature from time to time. Especially if
a friend has a corrupted .dll or otherwise and needs an old file to
get his legacy system working. I can't think of much else I use
regularly besides the away messages. I don't use chats much, maybe
once or twice a year and usually on my newer system.

So are there any clients for win98 that will work with those features?
Chats are unimportant, and the public chats haven't worked in a while.

I apologize for cross posting this, but gen_discussion seems to be the
only active group remotely relevant post-shutdown.

P.S. What other free support areas are there for win98 and other older
microsoft products now that the newsgroups are orphaned?

Miranda is nice. I used it for a little while until I got sick
of chatting/messaging. I don't know if it still works on 98 but
you have dozens of alternatives.

Wikipedia lists them all with most of their + and -'s.

No idea. If I have problems, I'll ask in 24hoursupport.helpdesk.
Once MS finally fishes their hatchet job (I reckon a year or
two, considering their organizational skills and their strict
adherence to scheduling in general) DL the updated NG list from
your server and search it. As it is, there is alt.windows98 and
others.

I never used AIM, nor do I want to, but you can always dual boot your
computer with Win2000. Thats what I do.

I bet they just added more useless bloat to AIM, and now you go to
live with it.... Thats the trend these days, make everything as
complicated as possible.

Its because of this trend that I'm starting to hate computers,
especially the internet. I can see myself cutting the line to the
internet real soon, and only using my computer for word processing,
storing / editing photos, and a few other things.

You can access your AIM account as well as other IM accounts with the
legacy version of Trillian 3:

That trillian link didn't work. The installer performs an illegal
operation almost immediately when I try to use it. I've redownloaded
twice.
I've been hoping somebody would respond with a program that actually
works.
I can't figure out how to get Miranda to work.

Please give me a link to a version that will install on Windows 98SE.
The link in this thread does not work. It performs an illegal
operation.

If that version won't install on your Win98 system, try the older
version 0.74...that works on my oldest Win98 machine.
