ran chkdsk in XP PRO SP3

Post by stumped-in-excel »

I recently ran chckdsk and now am being bombarded with problems including:

..dll not a valid windows image - replacing the file from a clean backup
did't work

error# 1722 problem with installer package (reinstalling this from Windows
FIX IT did not correct problem)

Thoughts?

You ran chkdsk. Yet you omit mentioning with WHAT parameters you ran
chkdsk. Without any parameters, chkdsk just checks the OS partition but
doesn't make any changes (i.e., chkdsk will run in read-only mode). To
commit changes to the partition requires the addition of command-line
parameters (run "chkdksk /?" to see how to use it).

Using the /r switch only means trying to recover bytes from bad sectors.
It doesn't guarantee success. If using /r doesn't recover they bytes
then you'll need to use heavier-duty disk diagnostics, like those
available from the web sites of most disk manufacturers. If those don't
work, you could go more extreme and try using SpinRite. If that doesn't
work, you'll have to mark the iffy sectors as bad, lose the data they
contain, and restore from backups, like from image backups to restore
the state of the OS partition.

1. You omitted the resuts CHKDSK reported.
2. In general, CHKDSK assesses only the current condition of
the HD format. It does not bear on the integrity of the set of
files required by WinXP (or any particular OS.)
