Hi,
Firstly, I am sorry about the large post, but I thought it would be
best if I gave you all the info and troubleshooting to date first.
Anyway, here's the problem:
For the last week or so, I have been getting the 80070005 error when
trying to update windows. Also, some other programs are failing to
install or update, but not all.
If I leave the computer switched on, eventually the Windows Update Icon
will appear in the notify tray, and if you hover the mouse over it, it
says "New updates are available". When you click on it to get the update
window on screen, the status is "No new updates are available for your
computer". Clicking on 'Check for updates' gives the 80070005 error
immediately.
Windows Defender also fails with the same error number when I try an
auto update, but if I download the update and manually run it, Defender
updates fine.
I checked the WindowsUpdate.log and it appears to have started on 19th
Feb - I can't think of any particular reason for that date.
I also have another problem, which I think may be related. My network
icon dissappeared from the notify tray about the same time. (I have also
tried loads of fixes for that as well) But I still have internet
connectivity.
I have hunted around looking for fixes, and tried all I could find, but
I still get the error, so - if anyone has/had the same problems as me,
and knows of a fix, please could you help ?
My System:
Homebuilt PC
Intel 3GHz quad CPU
8Gb DDR2 MEM
2 x Hitachi 1TB Drives
NVidia 8800 GTX Graphics
ASUS P5B Premium MoBo
Vista Ultimate x64
MS Office 2007
There are only 2 users on this machine, Me (an administrator) and THE
Administrator.
Just in case I had something nasty, I have scanned my drives with:
Kaspersky
Clam
Ad-Aware
Spybot
SuperAntiSpyware
Windows Defender
MS Malicious Software Removal Tool
-All come back clean-
I have tried various fixes found on the web:
* I have tried going back to my oldest system resore point
* sfc /scannow
* Merged registry file for BITS
* subinacl - on registry and %programfiles% and %windir% (as per Aaron
Stebner's WebLog)
* secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb
/verbose
* regsvr32 on the wu*.dll's
* Checked all the Windows update exe and dll's were the correct version
(7.2.6001.788)
* ResetSecuritySettingsBackToTheDefaults.msi - from ms site
* Re-installed Windows update agent
* Deleted Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder
* Deleted various other files that get remade automatically on program
run
* Used MSConfig to startup with just windows files
* I have also tried disabling all firewalls, anti-virus, and
anti-spyware products then running windows update
* Ran Windows Update as THE Administrator
* Deleted all temp files, recycle bin, temp internet files, etc.
* chkdsk /f
* Checked all services are started, and are set to auto
* I downloaded the standalone updater, but it wouldn't install -
80070005 Access is Denied
* I tried "TakeControlOf" (using icacls) on Program Files, Program
Files (x86), and Windows
* Downloaded and run MGADiag.exe
* Re-Validated my copy of Vista
* Removed my login password, rebooted, replaced it, rebooted
-None of the above made any difference-
Rebooted and rechecked Windows update after every change.
I now have NO history for Windows Update, so I don't know what has, or
hasn't been updated, or what the last installed KB was.
Here is a copy of WindowsUpdate.log for Defender:

Below is all possibilities. Try and see which will fix your issue
0x80070005 - Permissions issue. You can reset registry and file ACLs to
their Default state by following the directions here:

or

Suggestion from MS -
Install/reinstall Windows Update Client
x86-based versions of Windows - download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
package now.

Please see if installing the 3.0 client resolves the problem.

Hi Peter,
I'm sorry if I sound a bit terse, but did you actually read my post?
My OS is Vista x64, and I have tried all the options you pointed to,
(including the reference for the bad link).

Yes I read your post and answered. 32 or 64 bit makes no difference for this error
