icons changing

Post by shakey »

My Icons on the desktop are slowly reverting to generic icons. So far Word,
Excel, Logiteck quick cam, and Quicktime have changed.
Word and excel do not show, grayed out, icon info when viewing properties so
I guess their handled differently. Quicktime refers to a nonexistent file in
%systemroot%\installer\numerical numbers ********\QTplayer.ico. Similar
with quickcam. Yes I can view system root files.

Google search find this question a lot but I see no answers except some far
out guesses/cures. Did not read all 14,000 hits.
See references to a file for "icons in use" but do not find anything similar
on my system. Do find shell32.dll but it doesn't contain desired, MS
standard, icons
My system is well protected and ran spybot with no problems found.
Starting point please?

How about deleting that IconCache.db file, and letting it get rebuilt?

You can try using the TweakUI from the Powertoys for XP. It has a
"Repair" Icon option.

BTW: You should run other spyware tools as none find all possible
spywares.

Will give TweakUI a try. I do use other spyware but didn't list all I ran.

Really strange results---Deleted Iconcatche.db for user ME after saving a
backup copy. restarted computer and icons are as they were before shutdown.
I see the deleted file in recycle bin and where I backed it up but no
listing in in c:\documents and settings\me\local settings\application data.
Seems to be using a deleted file....Naa,cant be, but working w/o the file

It may take another reboot to get it to rebuild the cache. Or better yet,
you could temporarily change your video resolution to 16 bit, and then after
a few minutes, change it back again to 32 bit and see if that rebuilds it.
