Something new has started to happen. It really doesn't seem to be
program dependent either? I can use Windows Explorer, or the replacement
we use, PD Explorer, to make the same error occur.
The error is :
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Faulting application pdexplo.exe, version 7.0.1.3, faulting module
kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0000cffd.
It happens when a file is highlighted and either the DELETE KEY or RIGHT
MOUSE BUTTON happens to be used, up pops the error. The application then
closes after the error is dismissed.
The system (actually my wife's) is MCE XP SP3 with all the latest fixes.
I suspect some program she has either installed or recently deleted has
either broken a chain or damaged it by replacing a file.
System works correctly other than these 2 scenario's however, NetWork
Magic seems to work slowly between her system and mine, occasionally not
copying files correctly.
Suggestions?

Any idea what pdexplo.exe could be referring to?

Re: Delete key causes failure in KERNEL32.DLL
Leonard, that is PD Explorer, a Windows Explorer replacement. The exact
same failure occurs with Windows Explorer. Both crash the desktop and it
restarts, both fail the same way, they 'freeze' and Task Manager is
required to close them as well. The only difference in the error reports
is the faulting application, pdexplo.exe vs. explorer.exe.
I've got a 'lead' that it could be a context menu problem and I'm
looking into that with ShellExView, but I don't see anything sticking
out as a problem?
The system did have version 6 on it, on my system I'm running a newer
version (V7). The first thing I did was install V7 on the failing system
and that did NOT change anything, the problem still existed.
Any suggestions?

Re: Delete key causes failure in KERNEL32.DLL
Irv,
I just recently starting having the exact same problem in the last few days
on my XP desktop. I run Powerdesk 7 as you do, but I've been using it for a
few months as an upgrade for version 6. The problem also occurs in Windows
explorer and when performing file management in office 2007.
Interesting to note, if I select a file in PD Explorer and delete it using
the icons in the tool bar, there are no problems, but if I use the menus or
right click on the file it crashes.
Since the problem just started occuring recently I'm not sure PD itself is
the culprit.
Below are the events for Powerdesk, Windows Explorer and Office Word 12
(2007)
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module
kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0000cffd.
Faulting application pdexplo.exe, version 7.0.1.1, faulting module
kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0000cffd.
Faulting application winword.exe, version 12.0.6331.5000, stamp 48fa27b4,
faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, stamp 4802a12c, debug?
0, fault address 0x0000cffd.

Re: Delete key causes failure in KERNEL32.DLL
Mark,
I wish I has seen your answer sooner... my wife is using Norton's ISS
2009. I assume 'they' caused the problem. Interestingly though, it might
not be that either? I run N360 and PD7 and have NOT experienced the
problem, although I'm running XP Pro SP3 vs. her MCE XP SP3, although
that shouldn't matter?
Now what I did, it turns out she was getting other problems as well,
seems like it was getting worse each day, was use Norton Ghost backups
to restore her system to what it was 2 weeks before. No problem at that
time (2/26 backup used) when we restored the system. Almost IMMEDIATELY
Norton did upgrade and there are still no problems? My N360 upgraded
recently too, and I don't have a problem?
My filestamp, 05/12/2008 03:57 PM 307,200 PDShExt.dll
Her filestamp, 09/13/2005 06:32 PM 266,240 PDShExt.dll
so maybe it is the older version of the file that has the problem?
What doesn't make sense now is why she isn't having the problem now?
Other problems we found is that she has a quicklaunch item that open up
a command prompt. Clicking on that closes down the desktop. Some
programs (exe files) when clicked on in PDExplorer didn't start at all?
Had to use the RMB and OPEN to start them?
Anyway, I'll keep this in mind and probably copy my file over to her
system immediately if we hit it again? Why it hasn't happened, I don't
know?
If you wish, you can send me e-mail with the address here, it is real,
sigh... I really suspect it was partially due to something else. I
suspect the DLL just was in the chain and just maybe replacing it breaks
a chain that was really causing the problem? However, other reports on
the web does seem to implicate the context menu as a cause. I used
SHELLEXVIEW to see if that could help, but it didn't (I took off all
non-MS ones)?

Re: Delete key causes failure in KERNEL32.DLL
Hi. I am experiencing the exact same error. Your post about using the
icon to delete in Powerquest (I have version 6) is very helpful, as it
allows me to delte files! I occasionally have been getting gpf errors
for months, but the kernel32.dll delete error only started Monday.
I will keep checking.
