winlogon.exe APPCRASH WindowsCodecs.dll

Post by nick.n »

Hi all,

I am trying to fix a friend's laptop. It had been in constant use for
months with it only being hibernated. She then shut it down and went
to boot it a couple of weeks later and it failed to boot. Trying to
run a normal boot it gets as far as the "Please wait" message just
before displaying the logon screen and then it goes into an infinite
loop. The screen goes black, then back to "Please wait", etc. If
left switched on this just continues in this loop.

I managed to boot in Safe Mode without any problems. Removing the
Themes service allows it to boot in Normal Mode. Following is the
APPCRASH report -

Is she using some custom theme? That's very little data to go on, but
perhaps an element of the current theme is corrupt?
Does Check for Solutions show any results... ?

An ill-registered codec can cause that. I know how to repro a similar
problem just by deleting a single registry value. Winlogon loads the theme
which loads a PNG through WIC, and WIC crashes causing the infinite logon
loop described by the OP. Fixed in Win7...

Hi hndk,

APPCRASH errors seem to often not be caused by a fault in the dll file, but by something else.

Make sure your Windows Vista is as up to date you can get it.
Also make sure you are using the latest available drivers for your hardware, such as audio and video adapters.

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows Vista April 10, 2012.

Less and less software will be compatible.
