Can't install Java update

Post by jp »

There was a new Java update pushed to my XP Home but after download the
install failed with this warning message:
"bin\jp2iexp.dll: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name
was
found. No update done since file contents do not match."

The the install terminated with the following Java Setup message:
"Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer
package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish
as expected. Contact your support personnel or package
vendor."

As I don't want to hang on the phone for who knows how long for a
support person, I wonder if anybody here knows the solution for this.
The first msg doesn't seem to make sense to me about no update because
the contents do not match. Isn't the point of update to install a
changed content in the first place?

Go to the Control Panel's Add/Remove programs
Uninstall all versions
(there may be more than one version listed)

Open Windows Explorer and go to:
C:\Program Files\Java
You may find one or more sub-folders
(by version number) under \java folder.
Delete these folders

Now download and install the latest version
of Java JRE:

Note that there are some programs that require a specific version of
Java in order to run. Uninstalling all versions of Java could require a
reinstall of those programs.

I would try to uninstall any version ONLY from 6.10 and up, and then
download and install the newest Java, since beginning with 6.10
installing a newer version would remove the prior version.

If there are older versions installed, I would use a different approach
with them.

Thanks guys, but before I proceed, let me tell you what Java versions my
Control Panel lists and what folders I have in the C:\Program Files\Java
directory:

The Control Panel lists 3 installed Java versions:
Java (TM) 6 Update 6
Java (TM) 6 Update 7
Java (TM) 6 Update 12

The C:\Program Files\Java folder has the following sub-dirs:
jre1.6.0_06
jre1.6.0_07
jre6

The last one must have been from the failed install because it has
today's date stamp.
With this, can you provide me an updated instruction?

Thanks,
J. P.

Hi JP,

Usually programs that requiree a specific version are older versions
which you don't appear to have. I believe it's safe to uninstall all of
them (.6, .7, .12). Then download the full version (Offline) and install it.

From now on when an update is available, Java will uninstall the prior
version.

You have updates to a single version (6).
Delete them all and then install the most recent
version of Java using the link I provided.

OK, I did follow those manual instructions with a bit of change. I
uninstalled the existing java installations in the Control Panel before
installing the JRE 6 Update 13. The above link suggested it in reverse
order which just didn't sound like a clean install to me. The uninstall
actually removed all the java folders in the C:\Program Files directory,
so I did not have to delete them manually.
In any case, the JRE 6 Update 13 installation completed without any
problem and it also runs fine.
Thanks to all of you who lead me through this issue.

In what I thought to be me closing article in this thread I forgot to
mention that after removing those java folders in C:\Program Files
directory and before installing the new, downloaded version, I did a
search of my whole drive to see if I had any files or folders left with
the string "java" in their name. As it turned out, the C:\WINDOWS
directory also has a java folder with classes and packages which were
not removed. There were some other files, also under WINDOWS directory,
whose name suggested java connection. What about those? Why were they
not removed with the uninstall?

Could be these java files are
part of .NET Framework and if
they are, they should not be removed.

Hi JP,

Part of this is very strange. I update Java on several dozens of
workstations. And since 6.10, I have not seen one update or full
install remove Java versions prior to 6.10. They have to be removed
manually.

But at least you're working okay. Take care,

OK, so they will stay.
