Registery App Paths

Post by w. ewatson »

I have a commercial program that is failing because it cannot find
apogee.dll. I've been told by their tech support it is failing because their
is no path entry for it. It is ccdsoft.exe. Their documentation directs me
to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\...\App Paths. It's simply not
there; however, two of their other programs aren't there either, but yet
they execute just fine. They have entries under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Software Bisque, but there are no path names.
The Bisque distributes these programs. Comments?

They mention that virus checkers can mess things up in the registry, and
offer that I should reinstall ccdsoft.exe. It doesn't sound right.

If apogee.dll is not in the same folder as ccdsoft.exe, and ccdsoft
does not tell XP where it is, XP will look at ccdsoft.exe's 'Path' value.
It would be best if you reinstal ccdsoft.exe.
It may not be enough to create the missing key:

HKlm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\...\App Paths\CCDSOFT.EXE
(Default) REG_SZ d:\Path\To\ccdsoft.exe
Path REG_SZ d:\Path\To\Where\apogee-dll\Is\Hiding;

apogee32.exe is in Common Files. I don't even see how XP knows where one of
the other of their program is, thesky6.exe, at all. Yet it executes
properly. Whoops, it is there. Missed it. I was looking for a Bisque folder.
The last of the three is orchestrate.exe, and I do not see it under App
Paths, yet it executes.

It seems odd to me that if it's, ccdsoft.exe, not where it should be in App
Path, then it couldn't execute and apogee.exe would not even enter into this.

Another oddity of this is that they suggested applying a hot fix (their
term?), which is the latest update. That didn't do anything. To me it sounds
like something that replaces almost all of the current program, and should
have fixed the problem.

Well, probably a reinstall is necessary. However, I have the program on
another machine with XP. I'll look at the registry there and see how it
compares to the one on this machine.

The date and time was Thursday, April 02, 2009 9:14:04 PM, and on a

Hi W,

AppPaths is used in instances like the Run dialog box. It assists in
easily launching programs without typing the full path, similar to the
PATH variable used by the command prompt (but AppPaths isn't used by CMD).

Is apogee.dll located in the same folder as ccdsoft.exe? You could
create the key yourself using another key as an example.

Or take the suggestion and disable your AV software and try reinstalling.

apogee32.exe is in Common Files. A possible problem suggested by The Bisque,
responsible for ccdsoft.exe, is virus checkers. Up until about 30 minutes
ago I thought I had my Norton Security Scan turned off. I let my DSL ISP
provide virus checking on e-mail and elsewhere (web). However, I just opened
Norton. It went to an update, and when it finished showed Protection Level:
Detection Only. Further it shows a schedule for scans. I see no way to turn
it off or nullify the schedule. If I can't stop it, I may remote it today.

It's possible; follow their advice & see what happens. But be offline
before you kill your AV.
