OK. It's been done. Although all R-arrows looks a tad monotonous to me &
the pipe character looked just fine in my fake OE6 reader, I will honor
the requirements of your real one which can't seem to handle them. OK,
bye.

So I'd noticed. Well done.
> Although all R-arrows looks a tad monotonous to me
They are the standard character in newsreaders for indicating quoted
lines of text. Monotonous they may seem to you,but real newsreaders rely
on them in order to correctly format posts for the reader. Note that in
the second picture to which I linked that lines quoted from the previous
poster, and the one before that, and the one before that have different
colours depending on how many arrows are at the beginning of each line.
This makes even very long posts which contain quoted lines from multiple
previous posts easy to read, and also makes it easier to identify who
said what previously.
By changing your quotation character from the unconventional 'pipe' to
the correct right-pointing caret, it's not just me you're pleasing, but
all other news group subscribers with proper newsreaders who may read
your posts (you are also ensuring that more eyes will peruse your posts
rather than give up after the first few lines of trying to decipher who
said or is saying what, thus also benefiting you).

No newsreader,to my knowledge, is designed to handle a pipe instead of a
caret to indicate quoted lines of text.

I understand all that, but OE6 & OE-QuoteFix both include the pipe
character & even a colon to be used along with the right-pointing caret,
fake readers as they may be. And OE-QuoteFix even allows experimental
coloring! But, fine, you got it. I will honor the requirements of your n
ewsreader for most of the reasons stated.

Do the newsreaders that allow non-standard characters as quote
characters:
(a) treat quote characters in a special way, i. e. "recognise" them as
quote characters (i. e. treat quoted text differently, such as showing
it in a different colour)
(b) if (a) is "yes", do they recognise _non-standard_ characters in this
way? (If so, how do they know?)

[What does _that_ emoticon signify (-:] So presumably you add the ones
used commonly in the emails/newsgroups you read often, and accept the
occasional misinterpretation where someone else just happens to use one
of those characters to start a line.
