I'm running Windows XP SP3. Until tonight I was using DirectX 9.0c. I
wasn't aware that any later version would run with XP. So, when installing
a software package tonight it wanted a later version. I inspected
Microsoft's DirectX download site and sure enough, version 10 was available
and compatible with XP.
I installed it, without uninstalling DirectX 9.0c, but DXDiag says I'm at
9.0c, version 4.09.0000.0904. Is this just an anomaly, or is there a new
and renamed version of DXDiag, or do I somehow have both version of DirectX
installed?
Here's the list of installed components according dxdiag:

Why are you asking about DirectX 10 on Windows Vista?
This newsgroup discusses Windows XP. The latest version for DirectX on
Windows XP is version 9.0c.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 6652cd92a3
Take a look at the System Requirements for that unidentified "software
package" that claims it needs a later version of DirectX (than 9.0c).
You'll like find that the program is designed to run only under Vista.
Could this unidentified software package be a game?

You are mistaken. The DirectX End-User Runtime installer (dxwebsetup.exe)
is compatible with XP, but DirectX 10 is Vista-only. The runtime only
analyzes your PC and determines what DirectX (if any) you can update to, and
downloads them.
If you have an application stating you need higher than 9.0c then it should
also indicate that it needs Vista.

Yes, I am mistaken.
I went back to trace my steps, starting out at here: "DirectX 10"
<http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/ab ... x10-a.aspx>
Now that I had "DirectX 10" in my head, I scrolled down to the second to
last link, "Download the latest DirectX"
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en>
I didn't really want a web installer so I used the last link, "Get all
DirectX downloads"
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/brow ... FC422D1388>
What I found there, about half way down, was the "DirectX Redist (March
2009)". It's a stand alone package so I'm thinking, great. I still had
DirectX 10 in my mind. On that page for the redistributable in doesn't
mention 9.0c except in the footnotes. I thought I had pulled a fast one and
got version 10. Well, I just went back and looked. In the quick details
area for directx_mar2009_redist.exe it says 9.26.1590.
Mystery is solved, everyone was right except me. The software I talked
about is SiSoft Sandra 2009. It couldn't detect 9.0c even though I knew I
had it. I guess my DirectX might have been damaged somehow, and the damage
was repair by reinstalling 9.0c. Sandra installed just fine after that.
