There was an earlier thread in which the OP blackhead was asking what he had
to do to get Windows 98 (first edition) to play YouTube. I also have
difficulty with that, with the difference that the illegal operation I get
almost every time I try to play a YouTube video is not for FlashDrive, but
for my browser, FireFox.

I have FireFox 2.0.0.20. (I see that Firefox 3 will not run on Windows 98.)

What can I do to enabler W98 to play YouTube successfully?

No offense, but that page shows quite clearly that the uninstall_flash_player.hqx
file is for Mac OS 8x and 9x, NOT for Windows. (.hqx files are used by Apple
computers, not Windows computers).

Download the uninstaller for Windows by using the link on that page for the Windows
version of the uninstaller....it's the first link in the list of downloads, clearly
marked:
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flas ... player.exe

I saw the Mac and the 9X and I'm so used to 9X meaning Windows 9X, I
assumed that's what it meant. Stupid.

But now I have a problem. I uninstalled Flash Player in my Add/remove dialog
box, and then installed it from the other link that was provided. Later I
restarted my computer. But Flash Player doesn't show in my Add/Remove box.

Now I've run the correct uninstaller, and run the installer again, but still
Flash Player doesn't show in the Add/Remove box.

No harm was done by clicking on that incorrect uninstall file, because I
didn't and couldn't do anything with the file, but this is the last time I
try to install something after being up all night. I looked at the list
of uninstall files and flat-out misread it.

Yes, you ARE new, not only here, but to computing.

But *thank you* for nonetheless clarifying that ALL computers
have exactly the same hardware, setup, software configuration,
and problems, or lack thereof. I was under the impression it was
exactly the opposite, idiot that I am.

have the exact correct answer for you this time - while not a

Learn to use the computer. Files compressed with a Mac
compression program usually aren't intended for Windows.

And don't top-post (look it up), and credit posters properly.

Assuming the above is correct: is there any way of telling - ideally
before trying to play, but within a few seconds of starting wouldn't be
bad - whether something _is_ encoded with whatever is going to crash
Firefox/Netscape? (OK, crash flash, but it crashes the browser anyway.)

Not just "ie" but "e. g.": I agree, why do people switch to the newest
like lemmings, not just in this case but with all sorts of things!
