I have two computers.

One behaves, the other does not.

I go to www.theaa.com and go to route planner.
On the laptop the page loads ok
on the pc the page loads with errors at bottom of page.
Map on right of page does not load.

Program fails due to java.

Uninstalled java through add/remove.
rebooted
reinstalled java
rebooted

same problem
Kicked computer, had a cup of tea, rebooted, same problem

Tried several help pages - no help

Noticed that different dll being used on both pc's
I ran a clean up utility the other week and wondered if some empty folders
used for cacheing may have been removed.
SO thinking of a total uninstall of java and reinstall to create folders.

GOT NOWHERE.
HELP!

Do you have Java 6 Standard Edition latest Version 6 Update 13 (Build
1.6.0_13-b03) installed?

Your referenced website and Route Planner opened with no problems for me.

Also go to Add/Remove and remove all prior versions if you have not done so
already.

Note that there can actally be several different versions of Java present on
a system, and they may not get along, and sometimes the latest makes the
problem *worse*.

This kind of problem is regularly encountered by users of BlackBoard
educational systems, which is used by many universities for distance
learning.

I've gone so far as to swap hard disks, do a clean install of XP to a
freshly-partitioned and formatted drive, installed ONLY the Java version
that Blackboard specified - and it still didn't work properly. Blackboard
was unable to provide any suggestions other than "uninstall and reinstall
Java".

Contact the software vendors. This isn't a Windows problem. Look for all
versions of Java, remove them, install the ones the vendor specifies. Note
that some system utilities, such as those on Thinkpads, use an older version
of Java and when you uninstall it, those utiiltiies will break and you'll
have to reinstall that specific version -later ones wont' do.

because of the numerous exploits it exposes.

for me. (!)

Are you sure you mean Java, and not Javascript, which is an entirely
different thing? If you have a Javascript problem, then that is a problem
with the browser itself. (I used Firefox 3.08 for the test.)

I totally removed Java from my computers a few months ago just to see
what would happen and have had no problems loading any web site so
far, including the OP's. So why is it needed??

It is needed if you want to access certain types of Web content. If you
don't go to Web sites that use it, then you don't need it. I'm pretty
sure you need Java to use Yahoo games and other similar interactive
sites. As Patrick mentioned, Java is needed for BlackBoard.

Because some apps and sites require it.

For example, the Blackboard educational system, which is used by many
universities (Blackboard has a near-monoploy in this field) *requires*
specific versions of Java, the precise version being related to the
Blackboard server software version.

On Thinkpads, there are a number of system utilities that also require and
install an older version of Java.

If you don't use any software that requires Java, you don't need it. But
if you do, you can't do without it.

In general, it's not; it's like javascript or any other script. It's
ignored by the browser if it's not installed and any author worth his
salt doesn't write a java applet that will break his site if Java isn't
installed on a visitor's computer. It adds bells, whistles and lots of
niceties but shouldn't ever be absolutely required without a big notice
on the page that it is required. e.g. lots of games need Java; but they
will tell you so; they won't leave you hanging.
For the most part, you're not likely to ever notice it's gone unless
you've gotten used to its helper features and suddenly notice them
missing.
