I have recently started getting the following error upon rebooting after
running a anti-malware program I have.

Error loading C:\docume~1\locals~1\protect.dll
The specified module could not be found.

I just need suggestions on how to fix this and what I need to do

The key to this is in the path.

Letigimate programs do not install to or launch from the Local Settings
folders.

Your system is, or was, infected with malware.

The anti-malware program caught and removed the malware, but left behind the
launcher reference.

Use MSCONFIG to locate the reference and delete it.

Then, re-scan your system, and clear the Temporary Internet Files and Temp
folders. The free utility ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) is a great help with
this.

One of many references to the file, which can be malicious. Since you
got the error after a malware scan, it was most likely malicious.

The malware was deleted by your a/v software, but the reference to the
file was not removed from the registry.

Click Start, Run, type REGEDIT, click OK. Press the Home key, press F3,
type the name of the file into the search pane. Click "Find Next", and
when located, delete the reference to the file. Press F3 to continue
the search.

You can click File, Export, and save the entry to the Desktop. If you
remove it and there's a problem, double-click the .reg file you exported
to the Desktop and it'll be added to the registry again. You can create
a restore point before editing the registry too.

You could click Start, Run, type MSCONFIG, click OK, click the StartUp
tab, and deselect the item(s). When you restart the computer, you will
be warned that you're running in the Diagnostic mode; click to not alert
you again, and OK out. You won't see the message again. But I think
it's best to just remove the references from the registry.

Your issue is a prime example of why good registry cleaners are needed.
Don't listen to the others who say registry cleaners are "snake oil". To fix
your issue automatically, download CCleaner from here
http://www.ccleaner.com/ install it and when you run it select the registry
icon on the left to clean your registry. Let it fix all but choose to backup
when prompted. Your problem should then be fixed.

You can remove the protect.dll startup item using Autoruns.

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from
Microsoft).

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from
starting,or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you
uncheck youcan recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer
approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig..
Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an
item and select Search Online to get information about the item
selected.
