Whenever you post with a question about Internet Explorer, please say
what version of Internet Explorer you and what version of Windows
(including the service pack) you have.

From the error message it appears you have IE 6.

The behavior you are observing is usually caused by an incompatible
browser add-on.

If you take a closer look, bozo.... you'll see that the OP is NOT
talking about Internet Explorer.

Even the SUBJECT says that.

Put "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" in
quotes in a Google search, and you'll probably come up with a large list of
ideas, since the problem is not too unique.

Flappers:
As you have probably discovered through a Google search of the type of
problem you're encountering, there are a myriad of reasons - both software &
hardware related - that can account for this problem. Similarly a wide
variety of suggested "fixes". There's generally no easy diagnosis nor simple
fix in most cases. It's even possible that in the final analysis you'll have
no other practical recourse but to fresh-install the XP OS.

But before getting to that point, should it arrive, let me suggest the
following...

1. First of all, if it's possible to currently access any file that's
important to you, i.e., you could not tolerate its loss, make a copy of the
file to some removable media. I realize this may not be possible under the
present circumstances, but if you can do so then do so.

I would also suggest you first clone or disk-image the contents of your
present HDD but I have the uneasy feeling you do not work with a
disk-cloning or disk-imaging backup program.

2. You've indicated you've run the sfc /scannow command without success,
right? Have you tried running the chkdsk /r command? If not, do so.

3. Hopefully you have an XP OS installation CD that's either a non-branded
OEM or a retail version, so that you'll be able to run a Repair install of
the OS. Are you at all familiar with that process?

Anyway, if you're so inclined, respond to the above and if you want we can
go on from there.
