Windows Picture Fax Viewer

Post by rb »

It's me again with another question. When I first recovered my computer
yesterday I could double click on a jpeg file and it would open up with
the Windows Picture & Fax Viewer. But I installed my security app
(Bit Defender) and another app that is not a graphics app and now
when I double click on a jpeg nothing happens. But I can still right
click on the jpeg and choose Open With the Windows Picture Fax Viewer
and it will then open up. I looked in the registered file types and all of
the different jpeg jpg etc designations have the following as their openers,
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
which confirms to be the Windows Picture Fax Viewer in the task manager.
But I cannot figure why it won't open with a double click. Appreciate
any information.

After you:

**I can still right click on the jpeg and choose Open With the Windows
Picture Fax Viewer.**

Check the box: Always use this program to open this kind of file before you
open it.

That box is (has been) checked for all references, jpg, jpeg, etc. But when I double click one
there is only a very slight (almost unnoticeable ) flicker like it is trying to start but nothing
shows.

Ok I found the problem, if I open it in the windows file manager
(i.e. right click START choose EXPLORE ) then it still opens
a jpeg with a double click. But if I try it on Salamander 2.0 it does
not, so it is a private file handler issue and not a windows issue.
I have tried configuring Salamander to open this type of file with an
external viewer with the command line of
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
but so far I cannot get it to work. I will try emailing the Salamander folks.
Otherwise it is the most excellent file handler and I have used it for
years all the way back to the free 1.5 version. It has dual screen and
is much faster and more efficient than the sluggish windows explore and
it doesn't force you to always open up in My Documents.
Later......... And thanks for prodding my search to a solution.
