After doing a download of the Microsoft Malicicous Removal Tool and a
download of malwarebytes to fix a video error message I got watching live TV
on my Dell XPS 410 XP Media Center 05; I first got the BSOD with the error
message <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. error message. In reading past
forums, I then proceeded to insert my reinstall XP CD disc. I fixed the boot
menu to read the CD drive forst, then proceeded to repair windows. Following
the process I get through step 1,and that's it. It never asked for admin
password or to repair. I got the next error message concerning the system
registry does not have appear to have an active controlset key. I have
noticed that in forums there were two methods; one for using the repair
Windows route that lead me to the controset key message and the second route
that lead to using the installing a clean windows. I called Dell - after
trying to see if I could restart my system in safe mode(no), they said they
could fix my problem for $130.00. Does anyone out there know which way I
could go. At this point I am stuck and really don't want to wipe my system
clean. I reall would appreciate any help Forum readers can offer. Thank you1
