I would, however, NOT consider or recommend *blindly* installing much
further than that level, nor versions beyond 9 which one might find as
these are coded for the newer NT environments and vulnerabilities with
no cross platform [other than the differing NTs] consideration in the
coding even though with some manipulation, they might be installable.

Yeah we know support for W2K is ending, and we think we know when XP
support is ending [2014]. All Microsoft products have Support Life
Cycle, generally only adjusted by court order, pending case activities,
or in the instance of XP, you could say the consumer, where licensing
was extended; however W7 is now out and it seems that users like that
version [unlike VISTA] so XP will find its end.

As for stopping v4 WU, IMO that would be stupid. It takes very little
server space and is no more vulnerable than any other part of Microsoft
or its servers. Though of course I have also warned of this potential
loss of free public access at some point since Win98 will likely
eventually end up in the hands of the "pay for" special user access area
of Microsoft [if it hasn't already].

And there you would be right. I would agree, WMP isn't the best player,
nor should one try the un-official installations of 10 or those files
after EOL since they have NO coding specifically for the 9X environment
[never created for non-NT based systems].

not to my knowledge.

WHERE do you see anything "invasive"

I also went through the registry for the 98se version (I am
running 98se now) and there is nothing one could classify as
even /remotely/ invasive/ - almost all entries are the "play
with vlc" kind, mostly in HCR. I have no reason to think that
this changes drastically - if AT ALL - in the XP version.

I have 2 IDENTICAL unicows.dll (1.0.4018.0) on my XP partition,
one installed by my video capture card software, and one either
by vlc or by XP itself. (Given the insanity of XP I don't even
bother install-tracking on it.)

Why they're there (ie on the XP partition) is slightly
mystifying since the file is called "Microsoft Layer for Unicode
on Win9x Systems (MSLU)" but WHY is everybody so paranoid about
that file? I have scanned the XP partition (and my 98SE system)
with several AV/AM programs many times, CLEAN.

Worry about things that ARE worth worrying about!
