Windows Media Player 11 stopped working

Post by tom ponta »

As near as I can tell, I have WMP version 11.0.6002.18111 installed on my
Vista Home Premium system. I haven't used it in a while, so I'm not sure
when the problem arose, but whenever I try to play a file or even just open
the player, I'm informed it has stopped working with the following
information provided:

roblem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: wmplayer.exe
Application Version: 11.0.6002.18111
Application Timestamp: 4aa91411
Fault Module Name: kernel32.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6002.18005
Fault Module Timestamp: 49e037dd
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00049cc4
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: 6ffb
Additional Information 2: 2221bc0a197a4bb7f5f3ab58dfb8220e
Additional Information 3: 755b
Additional Information 4: d73315a30debe1a3d48e9a7e28073d74

I can't track down the correct files at the MS site to reinstall, and I'd
rather not use System Restore since I'm not sure how far back to go or how
many things would be undone.

Any suggestions?

Thanx:

Thanx for the suggestion, but nothing is ever that simple for me. A reboot
had no effect.

I don't suppose there's some simple, no charge way of contacting MS directly
about this? Maybe it's just me, but I can never find anything helpful on
their site, and Problem Reports and Solutions seems to go into the ozone
someplace.

Happened to me a couple times. I restarted the computer and all was ok
after the restart.

Typical of M$ support. There are plenty of free alternatives available. M$
can stuff it.

That was my first choice of action, but all I've been able to find out
anywhere is that it can't be uninstalled as it's an integral part of Vista.

If there's a way to uninstall it, I don't know what it is. It's the WMP
that came with Vista, not an upgrade.

Control panel -- Add/remove programs -- Turn Windows features on or off
-- Media features

Uncheck Media Player.

The above is for Win 7; Vista is similar, but you'll have to use your
imagination, since I don't have Vista system available to check the
exact format.

What I said below is to uninstall. To reinstall, reboot, go back and
recheck the box, and reboot again.
