DVD-Rom

Post by 98 user »

Hey all...I have a Samsung DVD-Rom SD612. It came with an Emachine 633IDS
with WindowsME. But I got a new harddrive (40 gig), and put decided to
install Windows98se on it. Now I am trying to get the DVD to work, but it
doesn't seem to want to. There are no drivers loaded for it, but I don't
know what drivers to load for it. I installed the DVD player VLC hoping to
make it work, but then I got this error report: *The libvlccore.dll file is
linked to missing export SHELL32DLL:SHGetFolderPathW.* I don't know what
that means or how to correct it. I tried to do a google on it and got more
confused as I read what it meant to other users. (apparently this error
report has come up for others) Any ideas? Thanks.

It appears that you have installed a version of VLC that is supported
only by Win 2K and later.

See http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

The libvlccore.dll file does not appear to be included in the latest
Win9x/ME release (0.8.6). The error message is telling you that the
libvlccore.dll library is looking for a SHGetFolderPathW function that
is part of Win2K's SHELL32.DLL library. This function is not included
in the Win9x version of the SHELL32.DLL file.

I suggest you uninstall your current version of VLC and then install
this version:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html#win98

BTW, if you want to see what functions are included in a particular
DLL or EXE file, you can use Dependency Walker:

I read the other replies and agree you are trying to use a version of
VLC for XP or at least Win2k. But I wanted to comment that I have
tried to install VLC several times in the past and I could never get
it to work for anything. This was awhile ago, so it was a version for
98. Some people seem to swear by it. I swore at it !!!!

You can fix the error message by installing the Unicode layer for W95/98/ME.
You may need this for other applications.
Description:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... e_MSLU.pdf
Download:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 7eeaee17e2

(or you can check whether Windows Update offers this as an automatic
update).

However, this will not make the driver compatible with W98 if it was
originally created for a more recent OS.

Does the device work properly as a generic CD-ROM drive?

I glanced at:
http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardw ... sungsd612/

The MAIN CD and DVD drive "drivers" are installed in DOS. If
it's a burner, that is all done in the Windows software.

What software plays whatever you put in your CD or DVD drive has
NOTHING to do with making the said drive work or not work to
begin with.

This is the kind of error that indicates you are installing
software which expects a newer version of Windows than you have.
Are you sure you downloaded the LAST 9x vlc?

They are NOT making anymore 9x versions.

Forget about vlc for now, that is not your problem. There is
LAST 9x version of vlc which installs perfectly, and it should
not have ANYTHING to do with your drives. I have it and it runs
great.

I am about to post the two Samsung drivers/firmware (incl. 9x)
in alt.binaries.test.gogo for you.
That should do it.

<SNIP>

The LAST 9x vlc version has the unicows and the other file and
puts them in win\system AOT in its own directory 0 where you had
to DL and put them yourself, which a lot of people had trouble
with.

Works like a charm.
