Unable to do system restore

Post by lorne »

Not sure if this is an XP or Office issue. Trying to install software
(Delphi 2009) it failed with an unknown error and I had to reboot. All my
office programs now failed to work with different error messages (not enough
memory, can't find fpsrvvtl.dll, can't initialise shared utilities, straight
to the error reporting window and others). All other software seems to work
fine.

Tried Office diagnostics - no problems found.

Tried switching users and everything worked for the other user on the
system.

Tried a system restore to yesterday which appeared to work until the
computer rebooted and I go the error unable to restore to 12 March.

Any ideas what could cause this? It seems odd that only office software is
affected and it works for other users so I assume some corruption in the
current user registry but why would system restore fail?

some more info:
1. System restore does not work to any recent restore point.
2. Office programs will not start in safe mode either.
3. Searching the net suggests that the problem is a corrupt user profile
which means that reinstalling office will not work. Any ideas how I can
isolate the corrupt bit and copy it from a working profile?

Have you created another profile and tested that theory?

Yes, and have spent the best part of a day setting the new profile up to
work like the old having copied accross all files from the old profile
except NTUSER files.

All programs work in the new profile.

If I run system restore now will it remove the new profile I just set up?

Lorne

Probably yes but create a new restore point before trying to revert
back. Doing that you can revert to your present arrangements if you do
not like what you find.

Are you using Norton?
