Windows Explorer exits unexpectedly Windows XP Pro
I too am having a windows Explorer crash problem. This happens when I move
my mouse over a .gz file (unix gzip file). It also used to happen when I
touched a zip file but that has not happened for a couple months. I get 3

Re: Windows Explorer exits unexpectedly Windows XP Pro
Sheila
The problem is most likely not with explorer.exe but with the file
association for the gz file extension.
Locate an .gz file in Windows Explorer. Place the cursor on the file,
right click and select Open With. What options are listed there?

Hope this helps.

Re: Windows Explorer exits unexpectedly Windows XP Pro
Thanks for replying. It's doesn't let me get there - all I have to do is
touch it with my mouse, not even to open and it kills explorer. My guess is
the format is causing it to choke - tho it didn't used to the last time I did
this a few months ago. From what I read in the error message it is
complaining about module kernel32.dll. This gz extensiion is a unix
extension from the gzip command. ie, a file becomes an archive (like a zip)
using tar, then to compress it use gzip, which compresses it better than the
compress command on a unix. In any event, it's a binary file with a gz
extension.
I noticed that Windows 2003 had a similar problem with a TIFF file and they
have fixes for that. But as of yet, I haven't seen a fix for this on XP Pro.
This file type has not been a problem before - the last time I used them was
about 4 or 5 months ago. in fact, my winzip pro can uncompress it if needed
so it recognizes it as a "tar or zip" type file. So the question is - why is
it crashing explorer - via kernel32.dll? And what can I do to fix?

Place the cursor on an adjoining file and use an Arrow Up or Arrow Down
key to position the cursor on the file.
The problem is not with kernel32.dll.
To extract .tar and .tar.gz files on Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP use
PowerArchiver 6.1 (freeware) or 7-zip (freeware) or Winzip (commercial).
For tar on MSDOS or other systems, see the FAQ of the comp.compression
newsgroup.

Re: Windows Explorer exits unexpectedly Windows XP Pro
Gerry - thanks for the info. I know in the past I could unzip it with
winzip. I can ftp it using wftp pro, etc. however at the present, all I
want to do is copy it an move it elsewhere. All I have to do is hover over
it with my cursor and it fails, whether I want to open it or not, which means
I don't really have to do anything conscious to cause it to fail. Whatever
action is performed by the cursor(mouse) as it hovers over the file, causes
explorer to crash. This problem is a relatively new phenomenom - can it be
caused by a security patch? There have been a lot of them lately.

Oh - I forgot to mention that I did as you asked, and even the up and down
arrow cause the same thing - crash.

Re: Windows Explorer exits unexpectedly Windows XP Pro
another FYI - I did the same thing on our windows 2000 and 2003 servers and
those do not cause a crash - so this problem evidently is only on XP Pro.

Your mouse could be over sensitive but I have not encountered your
problem in these newsgroups before.
What is the path to the file?
You may be able to copy the folder containing the file. Alternatively
another option may be to copy the file using the command line copy
command.
I am wondering whether you have a malware infestation?
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
1.38 -freeware (if you upgrade you pay).
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-An ... 04572.html
Run Malwarebytes' and turn off your current anti-virus
before you do to avoid a conflict. Disregard the invitation on the web
site regarding the Registry Optimiser -a Registry Optimiser is not a
helpful utility.

Hope this helps.

Re: Windows Explorer exits unexpectedly Windows XP Pro
Gerry: I don't think you can call a mouse "over sensitive" until you've
tried to look at things from the mouse's point of view.
Wait a minute...I see that I completely misunderstood your comment.
Never mind. Crazy day here.
