OK, I know this is going to be a long post, but I believe the added
information will help you to help me.
So... Here goes. Fresh install of Windows XP Pro, IE 7 and now 8.0. I
have plenty or RAM, hard drive space and a good Mobo/processor combination.
All of the Microsoft updates have been applied. I do not know where the
problem actually started, but IE will work OK for a while, but then it will
stop opening links to web pages. It will just sit there with a blank screen
or simply display the screen you were on to click on the link. It will show
that IE has found the site, but will not continue, the green loading page
indicator at the bottom of the screen also stops progressing. Sometimes
pressing F5 to refresh the page will work, but most of the time it will not.
Sometimes clicking on the HOME icon in the toolbar will work to open the
home page, but when IE doesn't want to open a page, it won't. It seems to
have a mind of its own. When EI is working, it works great, but when it
stalls, even restarting it will not always resolve the issue. The problem
is very intermittent and will usually occur when I need IE the most and it
is extremely frustrating. During the time that IE stops working, I can
still use things like Outlook Express, Outlook and even Firefox browser with
no problem, so I know it is not a connection problem. IE itself is not
showing as "Not Responding" and other than just failing to open the link or
go to a URL, seems to be functioning fine. I can open and close it with no
errors.
There are no viruses on the system, and I had no problem installing any
updates or any of the other usual problems that might cause malfunctions.
The computer is running perfectly otherwise. I am using Windows Firewall
with Avast Antivirus running in the background.
I checked the IE tools menu to find a host of add-ons. It looks like the
majority were installed by Microsoft, however there are some that were not.
I went through them to disable some of the ones I know aren't required like
those installed by my HP printer software. Below I have included all of the
add-one and their running status in hope you might be able to tell me if one
of them is the real culprit. I am being steered to the Microsoft
/Silverlight as one, but when I disable that one, MHN and other Microsoft
sites need it for something or other.
Troubleshooting consisted of upgrading to IE 8.0, resetting everything to
the default values for all of the tabs, deleting temporary Internet Files,
deleting cookies, refreshing IEs advanced to default values and setting the
cache to 125 megs. Setting to a larger cache worsened the problem. I even
lowered the cache to 50 megs. Although EI seems a bit better, it will still
fail browse.
The list of add-ons is as follows... I have added a line in each summary to
show which ones are enabled or disabled.

Re: Hope you can help - Tried the IE newsgroup...
Hello,
So does it work if you run IE8 without any add-ons?
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
Add-ons) to start IE8 without any add-ons. Try using the browser and see if
the same problem arises.
If the problem does not occur again, then it is one (or more) of the add-ons
causing the problem. Note that you only need to disable add-ons under
'currently loaded add-ons' in 'manage add-ons'. Those are the most likely
suspects as they are running all the time.
As to which add-on is causing the problem, you need to trial and error.
